Robert Heinecken. Shadow of Figure. 1971
This early work by Heinecken is a rare example of pictures he made using a camera. However, already he was experimenting with different ways of manipulating the image, such as overexposure and printing different details from the same negative. “Once you open the shutter of a camera you have made the first manipulative step away from the real,” Heinecken wrote shortly after he made these works. “Any step you take beyond that is really only a relative position on a sequential continuum of possible alteration. The end of this sequence is complete obliteration of the image.”
